The influence of pH and concentration on boron coprecipitation by calcite were evaluated under near-equilibrium conditions at 25°C. Calcite was precipitated by adding a metastable polymorph (vaterite or aragonite) to a solution of known boron concentration. This method maintains a nearly constant solution composition during the slow conversion of the metastable polymorph to calcite.Boron uptake in calcite was found to be strongly pH-dependent, increasing two orders of magnitude from pH 8.5 to pH 10.5. Boron incorporation into calcites precipitated from vaterite-saturated solutions was five times greater than in calcites precipitated from aragonite-saturated solutions. Ostensibly, these results suggest that the calcite precipitation rates were not low enough to attain equilibrium partitioning of boron into calcite. However, scanning electron micrograph analyses showed that the prevalent crystal forms of calcite generated from aragonite and those generated from vaterite were distinctly different. The different quantities of boron incorporated into these calcites may reflect different crystal growth mechanisms, consistent with face-dependent, nonequilibrium partitioning of trace elements in calcite.At a constant pH of 9.0, boron uptake increased from less than 15 to over 290 mg/kg CaCO3 as the solution boron concentration was increased from 5 to 100 mg/kg. Our results agree with those of other investigators, despite differences in solution composition, and calcite precipitation techniques used. The agreement between the studies may be because the crystal growth morphology of the calcite was rhombohedral in both cases.  相似文献

The partitioning of V between orthopyroxene-liquid and spinel-liquid has been investigated in synthetic and natural mafic and ultramafic compositions as a function of temperature and oxygen fugacity (fO2) at 100 kPa and in one experiment at higher pressure. The purpose of the experiments was to understand redox relationships for V in silicate melts with a view to deriving an empirical oxygen barometer for geochemically altered mafic and ultramafic magmas in the geologic record. Partitioning data for both orthopyroxene-liquid and spinel-liquid show profound changes at an fO2 approximately 3 orders of magnitude below the nickel-nickel oxide (NNO) buffer, suggesting changes in the dominant valence state of V in silicate liquids from V3+ to V4+, near this fO2.The results of the experiments on orthopyroxene-liquid are combined with published data for olivine-liquid and are applied to suites of mafic and ultramafic magmas that have equilibrated with a harzburgite residue in the mantle. The results show that Archean alumina-undepleted komatiites could have formed at fairly high oxygen fugacities, near ΔNNO ∼ 0, somewhat higher than Cretaceous komatiites and related picrites in the Caribbean region (between ΔNNO ∼ −1 to −3), and plume-related picrites from West Greenland (ΔNNO ∼ − 3). Picrites and boninites from convergent margins record the highest fO2’s by this method, (ΔNNO = +1 to +2), consistent with other petrological estimates of their redox states. The approach developed in this study can thus provide estimates for the redox states of altered, mantle-derived magmas in the geological record, to which more conventional methods of oxygen barometry cannot be applied.  相似文献

Particulate amino acids (THAA) were measured in the East Frisian Wadden Sea at monthly intervals from February to December 1995. Each time two tidal cycles were sampled at hourly intervals. THAA made up between 3 and 50% (mean 15±7%) of the particulate organic carbon and between 9.3 and 104% (mean 49±20%) of the total nitrogen pools. Seasonal variations of THAA followed the development of phytoplankton in the water column while tidal variability was controlled largely by physical forcing such as tidal current velocities and wave action. The overall molar composition of the THAA pool appears to be dominated by a detrital signal originating from erosion of surface sediments.  相似文献

The characteristics of the line profile variations observed in optical transitions of O-type stars are reviewed. For a few well-observed stars, there is compelling evidence that the variations are due to photospheric velocity fields from one or more modes of nonradial pulsation. However, the origin of the line profile variations observed in most O stars is not yet established. To date, there is little empirical evidence to suggest that the variability in optical absorption lines of O stars is causally linked to the stellar wind variability commonly observed in their UV resonance lines.  相似文献

Parameterization of wave runup is of paramount importance for an assessment of coastal hazards. Parametric models employ wave (e.g., Hs and Lp) and beach (i.e., β) parameters to estimate extreme runup (e.g., R2%). Thus, recent studies have been devoted to improving such parameterizations by including additional information regarding wave forcing or beach morphology features. However, the effects of intra-wave dynamics, related to the random nature of the wave transformation process, on runup statistics have not been incorporated. This work employs a phase- and depth- resolving model, based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, to investigate different sources of variability associated with runup on planar beaches. The numerical model is validated with laboratory runup data. Subsequently, the role of both aleatory uncertainty and other known sources of runup variability (i.e., frequency spreading and bed roughness) is investigated. Model results show that aleatory uncertainty can be more important than the contributions from other sources of variability such as the bed roughness and frequency spreading. Ensemble results are employed to develop a new parametric model which uses the Hunt (J Waterw Port Coastal Ocean Eng 85:123–152, 1959) scaling parameter \(\beta \left (H_{s}L_{p}\right )^{1/2}\).

Spruit has shown that an astrophysical dynamo can operate in the non-convective material of a differentially rotating star as a result of a particular instability in the magnetic field (the Tayler instability). By assuming that the dynamo operates in a state of marginal instability, Spruit has obtained formulae which predict the equilibrium strengths of azimuthal and radial field components in terms of local physical quantities. Here, we apply Spruit's formulae to our previously published models of rotating massive stars in order to estimate Tayler dynamo field strengths. There are no free parameters in Spruit's formulae. In our models of 10- and  50-M  stars on the zero-age main sequence, we find internal azimuthal fields of up to 1 MG, and internal radial components of a few kG. Evolved models contain weaker fields. In order to obtain estimates of the field strength at the stellar surface, we examine the conditions under which the Tayler dynamo fields are subject to magnetic buoyancy. We find that conditions for Tayler instability overlap with those for buoyancy at intermediate to high magnetic latitudes. This suggests that fields emerge at the surface of a massive star between magnetic latitudes of about 45° and the poles. We attempt to estimate the strength of the field which emerges at the surface of a massive star. Although these estimates are very rough, we find that the surface field strengths overlap with values which have been reported recently for line-of-sight fields in several O and B stars.  相似文献

Vortex generation and evolution due to flow separation around a submerged rectangular obstacle under incoming cnoidal waves is investigated both experimentally and numerically. The Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique is used in the measurement. Based on the PIV data, a characteristic velocity, phrased in terms of incoming wave height, phase speed, dimension of the obstacle, and a local Reynolds number are proposed to describe the intensity of vortex. The numerical model, which solves the two dimensional Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations, is used to further study the effects of wave period on the vortex intensity. Measurements for the mean and turbulent velocity fields further indicate that the time history of the intensity of fluid turbulence is closely related to that of the vortex intensity.  相似文献

A simple thermal model is developed to evaluate the heat exchange surface area of a hot dry rock geothermal reservoir. This model, in conjunction with the Rn model of Andrews and coworkers, is applied to RH12/RH15 system of the British HDR reservoir. Results suggest that although the estimated Rn transfer surface area represents the actual swept surface area, it is between 25 and 45 times larger than the heat transfer surface area. The difference is explained as due to clustering of several fractures within a range of thermal interaction, over the duration of the circulation. It is also shown that the decline in the measured temperatures of circulation fluids since 1985 to the present is consistent with the heat exchange surface area going through a maximum in 1987.  相似文献
